Human Factors

Healthcare Human Factors

BERGO provides specialist human factors services and training that are aligned with the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) guidance on human factors.

We work with healthcare organisations throughout the UK to improve patient safety and quality through the application of human factors principles and methods.

We have a broad range of project experience covering studies on safety culture, the management of medical error and organisational learning.

Medical Error Risk Management

Medical teamwork training based on aviation Crew Resource Management (CRM) resulted in 30-50% less technical errors.

McCulloch et al (2008)

An estimated 10% of patients admitted to hospitals in developed countries are harmed from unintentional medical errors, of which 50% are avoidable (WHO, 2010).

Covering both systems-based and individual-based approaches, we assist healthcare organisations with error prevention strategies.

We carry out human FMEAs, inspect incident reports and incident reporting systems, and run workshops in Reason’s 3 bucket model technique.

Safety Culture Assessment

BERGO has experience in measuring safety culture across different healthcare settings and within the Oil & Gas sector.

We design and carry out safety culture questionnaire surveys, interviews and focus groups to measure the strong and weak aspects that characterise safety.

Job & Process Design

Following the introduction of the 'Surgical Safety Checklist' inpatient deaths and major complications fell by more than a third.

ScienceDaily (Jan, 2009)

The role of human factors in the design of medical tasks and processes is invaluable, as evidenced by the ‘Surgical Safety Checklist’.

We help simplify tasks and standardise safety-critical processes in order to improve efficiency, effectiveness and safety.

We have been involved in studies on medication management, multidisciplinary teamwork and communication, and surgical tasks.
